Mikel Landa of Team Sky is the first leader of the 2017 Vuelta a Burgos after winning the opening stage of the Spanish 2.HC race.

The 2017 edition of the Vuelta a Burgos began in the city of Burgos itself and finished in the same location 151 kilometers later.

One of the race favorites, Team Sky's Mikel Landa, did not wait for the more mountainous stages to make a difference and found himself in a lead group with Matteo Trentin of Quick-Step Floors and Astana's Sergey Chernetsky with about seven kilometers to go.

Danish rider Lasse Norman Hansen of Aqua Blue Sport joined the group shortly after although the peloton remained at a small gap coming into the last climb to the Castillo de Burgos.

Although the peloton came close on the climb, Landa still had enough energy left in his legs to take the stage victory ahead of Chernetsky. Third place went to Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe who had bridged the gap with the front group at the last moment.
