Brent Bookwalter of BMC Racing Team has won the second stage of the Tour of Utah. The American delivered a powerful uphill sprint at Snowbasin to claim the victory.

The second stage had the riders testing their climbing legs. Starting in Brigham City and finishing 152 kilometers (94 miles) later at Snowbasin, the peloton faced three climbs including the difficult ascent leading to the finish.

Canadian Adam De Vos of Rally Cycling found himself ahead of the reduced peloton on the final climb and gave it his all to stay ahead of his chasers, but was eventually caught at about one kilometer to go.

James Piccoli of Elevate - KHS Pro Cycling attacked shortly after and almost made it all the way to the finish, but he was eventually surpassed by Bookwalter in the final meters. Piccoli ended up in third place behind Rally's Sepp Kuss.

While missing out on the stage win, the second place was enough for Kuss to jump to the top of the standings ahead of Bookwalter and Piccoli. The three all have the same time but Kuss' better placement in the opening stage earns him the leader's jersey.

Initially, even the race organization thought that Bookwalter had taken the overall lead thanks to bonus seconds, but the lack thereof in the second stage meant that it was instead Kuss to move into first position.
