Fernando Gaviria rules out Vuelta a España to focus on World Championships

Fernando Gaviria is not going to start at La Vuelta a España. The rider of Quick-Step wants to focus on his recovery in order to return to action in the last part of the season.

The Colombian was in doubt of his participation in the Spanish Grand Tour after having a very good Giro d'Italia, in which he took home the points classification jersey.

Gaviria was set to start at last weekend's RideLondon, but he suffered an injury during training in Colombia. The rider hit his calf with his pedal, causing a haematoma that needed surgery.

The rider is still in his home country, where he attended the first stage of the Vuelta a Colombia, and talked about his upcoming plans. "I hope to recover properly from the injury in my leg to be back racing as soon as possible," said the rider to Colombian television channel WinSports.

"I think I won't be going to La Vuelta because there are only ten days left and it is impossible for me to get in ideal condition. Now I will focus on the World Championships."

The World Championships will take place in Bergen, Norway, between the 17th and the 24th of September.
