Dutch rider Ellen van Dijk of Team Sunweb has successfully defended her European Time Trial title at the continental championships in Denmark.

The course in Herning was 31.5 kilometers long and had the riders face slippery wet roads. The main victim of the bad conditions was Sweden's Emilia Fahlin who crashed and was forced to abandon the race.

Defending champion Ellen van Dijk never really allowed things to get exciting, although she did almost suffer a crash in the early kilometers.

Van Dijk needed 58 seconds less to complete the course than Belgian Ann-Sophie Duyck, who beat Olympic road race champion Anna van der Breggen by six seconds to take the Silver medal.

The top five was completed by Lucinda Brand of the Netherlands and Austria's Martina Ritter.

Other big names were found further down the ranking with Olga Zabelinskaya setting the eighth time and Elisa Longo Borghini finishing in 18th position.
