Mikel Landa (Team Sky) has won the queen stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. The rider was the strongest at the final hors-category climb and has almost sentenced the race in his favour.

The queen stage of the Spanish race was 173 kilometres long between Ojo Guareña and Picon Blanco. The day featured one climb of the first category, four of the third and a final hors-category ascent.

Within the first ten kilometres the escape of the day was formed. Dorian Godon (Cofidis), Bernardo Suaza (Manzana Postobon), Lasse Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport), Fabien Grellier (Direct Energie), Jacques Van Rensburg (Dimension Data), Fabricio Ferrari (Caja Rural), Gatis Smukulis (Delko Marseille Provence KTM), Jorge Cubero (Burgos BH), Martijn Budding (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) and Pieter Serry (Quick-Step Floors), managed to create a gap of more than three minutes with a peloton mainly pulled by Team Sky.

During the ascent of the Alto de Ailanes, Smukulis attacked and got almost a minute over his escape companions. The last climb proved too hard for the Latvian however and he was soon caught by the pack.

Smukulis was not the only one to suffer on the climb however and as the kilometres passed, the peloton got smaller and smaller.

Enric Mas and David de la Cruz (Quick-Step Floors), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Jaime Roson were the last riders to resist in front. At a bit more than two kilometres to go, de la Cruz attacked and was followed by Landa, and the two continued together in front.

Landa had the better legs at the last meters and crossed the line ahead of de la Cruz, getting a firm hold on the leader's jersey.
