Marianne Vos of the Netherlands has won the women's road race at the European Road Championships in Herning, Denmark.

The women's course consisted of six laps on a 20 kilometer circuit in and around Herning. The route was mostly flat.

The finale of the race featured a lead group with Vos, Olga Zabelinskaya, Elisa Longo Borghini, Giorgia Bronzini and Polish rider Katarzyna Pawlowska.

The latter crashed on her own in the last kilometers and lost many seconds having her bicycle looked at by a mechanic.

Russia's Zabelinskaya attacked with just over a kilometer to go and her pace was too much for Longo Borghini to keep up with. Vos and Bronzini did react well, meaning that a sprint of three was imminent.

Vos initiated the final sprint herself. Zabelinskaya had no energy left to react and was immediately ruled out of the contest. Bronzini held Vos' wheel until the line but never managed to get past her Dutch rival.

By winning this race, Vos succeeds her compatriot Anna van der Breggen who became the first European elite champion in 2016.
