Youngster Giulio Ciccone wins queen stage at Tour of Utah

Young Italian rider Giulio Ciccone has won the queen stage of the Tour of Utah. The Bardiani-CSF climber finished solo at Snowbird Resort.

The sixth of seven stages in the American 2.HC race was particularly short at just 61 miles (99 kilometers). Two major climbs were included, most importantly the final ascent to Snowbird with a total elevation of more than a kilometer.

A group of 18 riders was formed early on with Cuban Ruben Campanioni surviving the longest. He too was eventually caught by the peloton.

Bardiani CSF's high pace on the final climb was too much for many to keep up with. The final move came when Ciccone launched a powerful attack with none of the others able to stay in his wheel.

The 22-year-old with an advantage of 35 seconds over his compatriot and teammate Simone Sterbini. Axeon Hagens Berman's Neilson Powless came in at 41 seconds, just ahead of Gavin Mannion of UnitedHealthcare and race leader Rob Britton of Rally Cycling.

The Canadian remains at the top of the overall standings with only Sunday's final stage to Salt Lake City left to go.
