Marco Canola wins final stage in Tour of Utah, overall victory for Rob Britton

Marco Canola of Nippo - Vini Fantini has won the final stage of the 2017 Tour of Utah. Rally Cycling's Rob Britton confirmed his overall victory.

The last of seven stages led the remaining riders to Salt Lake City with a tough 73 mile (118 kilometer) route divided into 11 laps. Each lap included a climb of about 500 ft (150 meters).

Albanian Redi Halilaj of Amore & Vita found himself ahead of the pack in the finale and was chased by BMC's Manuel Senni and Cylance Cycling's Kyle Murphy.

Senni dropped his fellow chaser in the final lap and bridged to Halilaj with about seven kilometers left to ride. The Italian then went solo but his effort couldn't compete with the strength of the peloton and things were back together with four kilometers left.

A new attack was then launched by four riders including two of Caja Rural - Seguros RGA, but their attempt came to nothing as the peloton would not allow the gap to grow bigger than a few seconds.

Another Caja Rural rider, Miguel Angel Benito, attacked in the last kilometer and was followed by Marco Canola. The Nippo - Vini Fantini rider had enough strength left in his legs to leave the Spaniard behind and take the stage victory several seconds ahead of his nearest competitors.

Rally Cycling's Rob Britton safely finished in the pack to secure his overall victory. The Canadian succeeds last year's champion Lachlan Morton.
