John Murphy of Hincapie Racing has won the opening stage of the Colorado Classic and has as such earned his second stage win this month.

The opening stage of the four-day 2.HC race took place in Colorado Springs where the riders had to complete six local laps of 25.1 km (15.58 miles) each.

The protagonist on the day was without a doubt the heavy rain. Although it also rained in the BinckBank Tour and the Arctic Tour of Norway earlier on the day, the levels of precipitation in the US race were far more significant and forced broadcasters to pull out mid-stage.

Several attacks took place in the finale and it was unclear when the last adventurists were caught, but a mass sprint was the result due to the work of Trek-Segafredo to bring things back together on time.

In the sprint, Murphy crossed the line ahead of UnitedHealthcare's Travis McCabe and Axeon Hagens Berman's Logan Owen.

Murphy, who also won a sprint stage at the Tour of Utah earlier this month, is also the first overall leader ever in the Colorado Classic.
