Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo) has won the fifth stage of the BinckBank Tour. The Dutchman launched a strong attack in the last meters to avoid a group sprint.

The fifth stage of the Belgian-Dutch race was from and to Sittard-Geleen over 167.3 kilometres.

The first escape group of the day was formed within the first 30 kilometers. A group that included riders like Petr Vakoc (Quick-Step Floors), Michael Hepburn (Orica-Scott) and Gediminas Bagdonas (AG2R La Mondiale) created a gap of more than four minutes with the peloton.

Close to the 20 kilometre mark, the last escapees were reeled back in by the peloton and soon a group of favourites was created. Riders like Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo), Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) and Oliver Naesen (AG2R La Mondiale), went ahead and created several attacks.

At the last kilometre, Boom launched a final attack and could create a gap big enough to take the stage victory and with it, the leader's jersey. Sagan and Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) crossed the finish line in second and third position, respectively.
