Alexandre Geniez and Thibaut Pinot celebrate in Tour de l'Ain

Alexandre Geniez of AG2R La Mondiale has won the closing stage of the Tour de l'Ain. FDJ's Thibaut Pinot successfully defended his lead to take the overall victory.

The last of four stages was short at only 111.2 kilometers, starting in Lelex and finishing in the town of Culoz.

FDJ controlled the race from the start, making sure that a lead group of ten riders had no chance of staying ahead of the peloton. Hubert Dupont of AG2R La Mondiale survived the longest but he too was caught on the Grand Colombier climb.

Race leader Pinot then attacked along with LottoNL-Jumbo's Steven Kruijswijk and Androni-Sidermec's Mattia Cattaneo. Both were dropped near the top of the climb although Cattaneo managed to rejoin on the descent. More riders eventually bridged the gap, including the eventual stage winner Geniez.

Cattaneo tried a final attack in the final kilometer but it was instead Geniez to sprint to victory ahead of Pinot and the Italian. A group of seven riders finished at four seconds.

Pinot secured his overall victory with an advantage of 14 seconds over his teammate Gaudu. Geniez, the winner in 2015, finished third at 52 seconds.
