Czech climber Jan Hirt to join Astana Pro Team

Czech cyclist Jan Hirt is set to make the move to the UCI WorldTour by joining Astana Pro Team at the start of next season.

The 26-year-old currently rides for CCC-Sprandi-Polkowice where he managed a 12th place in this year's Giro d'Italia, his first ever grand tour. He also finished third in the overall classification of the Tour of Croatia and won the 2016 edition of the Tour of Austria.

"Jan Hirt is a young and quickly progressing rider," said Astana's general manager Alexander Vinokourov. "In the last two years his development really impresses, while at the Giro d’Italia he proved his great potential for the Grand tours.

"I am sure, Jan will bring some strengthening to our team, while his moving to the WorldTour level will help him to take a big step ahead in his professional career."

After five seasons in lower categories, Hirt finally sees his hard work pay off with a move to cycling's top tier.

"During the last few years I’ve worked a lot to constantly move ahead in my professional development. And now, I am very happy that in the next season I will take the so long-awaited step into the WorldTour.

"I am proud that this step I will do with Astana, one of the strongest teams around the world. That’s something incredible! I am ready to give my best to help Astana Team to reach high results in the upcoming season."

The rider has signed a deal for two years.
