Vuelta a España: BMC wins TTT, Rohan Dennis leads GC

BMC Racing Team has won the first stage of the Vuelta a España. Australian Rohan Dennis was the first of the squad to cross the finish line and as such gets to lead the General Classification after the first day.

The first stage of the last Grand Tour of the season was a Team Time Trial in the city of Nimes, France. The riders had to go around the old town over a route of 13.7 kilometres.

Belgian team Lotto-Soudal soon took the lead with a time of 16 minutes and 22 seconds.

The race didn't start well for UAE-Team Emirates. Darwin Atapuma and Federico Zurlo missed a curve and ended up on the ground, making the entire team lose time at the end of the stage, finishing the course in 16 minutes and 45 seconds.

Lotto-Soudal had to move away from the hot seat when Bora-hansgrohe stopped the clock at 16 minutes and 19 seconds.

The reign of the German team didn't last long, because soon another team from that country got a better time. Team Sunweb finished the circuit in 16 minutes and four seconds.

The next team to get in the hot seat was Quick-Step Floors with a time of 16 minutes and four seconds, just faster than Sunweb. Not much later, BMC broke the 16 minutes mark and stopping the clock at 15 minutes and 58 seconds.

Chris Froome's team Sky came in fourth at nine seconds while Orica-Scott was 17 seconds slower than BMC, Movistar 24 seconds, Bahrain-Merida 31 seconds, Katusha-Alpecin 33 seconds, Trek-Segafredo 35 seconds and Astana 41.

At the end of the day, BMC's Rohan Dennis got to wear the first Red Jersey of this year's Vuelta.
