Vincenzo Nibali conquers first mountain test, Chris Froome leads GC

Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) has won the third stage of the Vuelta a España. The rider was the fastest in the final sprint against the other race favourites.

The third stage of the Spanish Grand Tour was 158.5 kilometres long and formed the first mountain test for the favourites. The day featured two first category climbs and one of the second category.

The day started with an escape of seven riders. Axel Domont and Alexandre Geniez (AG2R La Mondiale), Fernando Orjuela (Manzana Postobon), Davide Villella (Cannondale-Drapac), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Anthony Turgis (Cofidis) and Fabricio Ferrari (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), managed to create a gap of more than five minutes with the peloton.

With 54 kilometres to go, Domont attacked and took a lead of 25 seconds over the chasers, who eventually caught him ten kilometres later. Soon it was Geniez' turn to test the waters and the Frenchman formed a gap with the rest of the front group and was joined by Villella a few kilometres later.

Meanwhile, Movistar's Antonio Pedrero jumped from the peloton with the objective of catching the escapees. And in the pack, Team Sky set a high rhythm which proved to be too much for riders like Richard Carapaz and Marc Soler (Movistar), Jarlinson Pantano (Trek-Segafredo) and Rohan Dennis (BMC).

At 27 kilometres to go, the bunch captured the remaining escapees and continued together. At the start of the last ascent, Team Sky set a very high pace and quickly dropped riders like Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo), Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe), Rui Costa (UAE-Team Emirates) and Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo).

At seven kilometres from the finish line, Chris Froome (Team Sky) attacked and the only rider that could stay on his wheel was Orica-Scott's Esteban Chaves. Behind them Fabio Aru (Astana) and Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) attacked from the chase group and dropped Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and the Yates brothers (Orica-Scott).

During the last descent, Bardet and Aru caught Froome and Chaves. In the last kilometre the chasing group joined the leaders as well and the final sprint was won by a strong Nibali. David de la Cruz (Quick-Step Floors) crossed the finish line second and Froome third.
