BMC Racing Team's Nicolas Roche and his teammate Tejay van Garderen trail new race leader Chris Froome by only two seconds after finishing in the front group on Monday.

The two teammates did well to bridge to the lead group in the last kilometer but played no role of significance in the sprint. Roche crossed the line in seventh place, just ahead of Van Garderen in eighth.

The result allows the two to move into third and fourth place in the overall standings, both at two seconds from Froome.

"It was pretty tough," the Irishman said. "It was exactly what I expected. I know every time the race comes to Andorra it is not an easy finish and today was no different. But once again the race is usually made with the riders and the climbs can be as tough as they are but it is the racing what makes it harder or not.

"I think today the tempo in the last fifty kilometres was very high and there was a lot going on. The team did very well, a very good job right from the start. Everyone was really giving us a hand, putting us in position, getting the bottles, which was very important today because it was 37 or 38 degrees.

"Coming into the finish we were a few seconds from (Chris) Froome on the top and Tejay (Van Garderen) came back to me during the descent, and we rode into the last kilometre. I tried to anticipate the sprint but it was going nowhere, and they counter attacked right away, but I tried to maintain the same time as them.

The small time gap with Froome makes the time loss of the second stage on Sunday even more painful.

"After winning the team time trial I was hoping that today was the day that I could have taken Red and I had that thought in the back of my mind. Today it was painful to think about those seconds that we lost yesterday."
