Alberto Contador of Trek-Segafredo had a day to think about his time loss of the third stage, and admits that stomach troubles may well be the cause of his problems.

The Spaniard lost more than two minutes on the front group on Monday and needed to stay concentrated to avoid further damage in the tricky stage 4 finale a day later.

"It has been a transition day but it is true that everybody was very nervous," he explained to radio station Onda Cero. "Late on the day there were some crashes and the finish was difficult and it was important to have a good position."

Contador, for whom this is his last race as a professional cyclist, added that he had been suffering from stomach troubles which forced him to make a change of plans.

"I had a difficult night particularly because I came to the race with some plans and now those plans are crooked. I had a problem and I have to trust that I'm going to recover and try to do something later in the race.

"When you have stomach problems you never know if it's a virus that will stay for a while or if it will disappear overnight. I want to think it will disappear suddenly but I also have to consider that it may be the other way, so I have to take the race day by day. Today we have been concentrated in the race and that's it."
