Vuelta a España - Alexey Lutsenko: This is a great victory for my career

Alexey Lutsenko of Astana Pro Team took his biggest professional victory so far by winning the fifth stage of the Vuelta a España on Wednesday.

The Kazakh rider formed part of the original breakaway and later found himself riding in front with Katusha-Alpecin's Marco Haller until he dropped his companion on the final climb.

"The climb was very difficult," Lutsenko said shortly after taking the victory.

"I attacked at the first part of the climb and continued all alone until the end. Before the climb, it was easier because I had the company of the Katusha rider. But I'm very happy with the result of the stage in this Grand Tour. I'd like to thank my team and teammates. This is a great victory for my career."

The rider recovered on time after crashing out of the Tour de France in July.

"I fell in the Tour de France but I recovered completely. I talked to my team to let me recover in my house with my family and I could do it completely and get my shape ready for the Vuelta. Now I will have to prepare for the World Championships."
