Alberto Contador finished in the group of race leader Chris Froome on the fifth day of the Vuelta a España, a result that looks more promising than earlier in the race.

Along with Esteban Chaves and Michael Woods, Contador was one of only three riders capable of following Froome's wheel when the Team Sky rider attacked on the final climb. The Spaniard looked strong until the end.

"It's not that I'm happy with the performance. It is about the feelings having been better than on other days," he said. "They are bit more similar to the feelings I was having before coming here, but well, we're not going to be euphoric. It was a very short, very explosive climb. It was a small climb and nothing like what is coming in the second week.

"But I'm happy, overwhelmed by the love of the public. It felt like I was riding on the porch of my house and I can only thank them for the love they give me.

"Today was about seeing how well I was feeling, it is true that I've recovered a bit of the good feelings and from here we can analyse to make a decision in the days to come.

"Now the important thing is to recover and see how the race starts taking shape. Sometimes instinct is very good and sometimes you can think different things when you are on the bike."
