BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen remains confident after a difficult stage 6 at the Vuelta a España, in which he crashed twice but still finished at only about 20 seconds from his key GC rivals.

The American was forced to chase the group of favorites after hitting the ground the first time, a situation that could have ended much worse.

"I got a quick bike change and then the cars were in between and I was able to jump through and get back to the group that I was in," Van Garderen told CyclingPub. "Luckily I was able to do that. I was unlucky but lucky at the same time."

The rider crashed again with just three kilometers to go but was determined to cross the line with as little time loss at possible.

"I've worked too hard to just have the Vuelta end on a day like that so I'm gonna keep fighting," he said.

Van Garderen believes in his chances for this Vuelta a España. "I think I'm riding really well, riding strong, so I want to get as high up there as I can."
