Matej Mohoric (UAE Team Emirates) has won the seventh stage of the Vuelta a España. The 22-year-old formed part of the day's escape and crossed the finish line alone.

The seventh stage of the Spanish Grand Tour was 207 kilometres long between Lliria and Cuenca. The route featured three climbs of the third category, as well as hard wind and a bit of rain.

Very soon after the real start of the race, 14 riders formed an escape group. Riders like Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Jetse Bol (Manzana Postobon) and Matej Mohoric (UAE Team Emirates), got an advantage of more than nine minutes over the pack.

There were many crashes during the stage, taking out riders like Larry Warbasse (Aqua Blue Sport) and Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data).

During the last ascent of the day, there were several attacks in the front group which as a result broke into several pieces. Mohoric took the lead close to the top of the climb and was chased by some remaining members of the original escape.

Mohoric could keep the distance with the chasers and crossed the finish line with an advantage of 16 seconds. This is the first Grand Tour victory for the 22-year-old. Yesterday's runner-up Pawel Poljanski (Bora-hansgrohe) was second once again and Rojas came in third.

Manzana-Postobon's Jetse Bol rode in the virtual lead during some time but Sky took back some time in the last 20 kilometers to keep Chris Froome in the Red Jersey for another day. Nevertheless, Bol does move into the top 10 of the general classification.
