Sven Erik Bystrøm out of Vuelta a España, World Championships in doubt

Katusha-Alpecin has confirmed that Sven Erik Bystrøm is out of the Vuelta a España with a broken scapula. The Norwegian is set to be out of competition for about four weeks.

One of the victims of the stage 7 crashes was the Katusha-Alpecin rider. It was visible during the stage that he was in pain and even went back to the medical car for treatment, but despite that, he managed to finish the ride.

Right after the stage, the team said that Bystrøm was "okay" but after undergoing checks at the hospital, he was diagnosed with a left scapular spine fracture. After this, the team confirmed to Norwegian television channel TV2 that the recovery time should be around four weeks.

This puts in doubt the presence of the rider at the World Championships in Bergen. He was set to be part of the nine man team that is going to represent Norway in the race that will be in the Scandinavian country.

"It sucks. I'm not sure about the championships. I have a plan but it can be difficult. I hope, of course, that I will manage to recover on time but at the moment I'm uncertain about how long the rehabilitation will be," he told TV2.
