Mikel Nieve believes that Team Sky, including its leader Chris Froome, is looking strong as it aims to secure the Briton's first overall victory in the Vuelta a España.

Froome currently sits in first place in the overall standings and has proven to be in control of the race so far.

Talking to CyclingPub, Nieve acknowledged the difficulty of the race but added that everything is going according to plan.

"It's good up till now," the Spaniard said. It has been a difficult Vuelta so far but the team is working well. We are doing well and hopefully it stays that way."

As one of Froome's key helpers in this race, Nieve has been able to see how his leader progressed coming into the Vuelta after winning his fourth Tour de France in July.

"He is looking good so far. He is leading the race and reacting very well. He is looking really strong and we'll have to see if he continues like that. We have to take it one day at a time."

The current Vuelta a España will be Nieve's last grand tour with Team Sky as the rider signed a contract with Orica-Scott for next season. Nevertheless, this does not really affect him at this point in the race.

"Right now I have my mind set on the race and it's not really in my thoughts, but I think that the last day in Madrid will be special."
