Jan Polanc of UAE Team Emirates finished second in the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España after managing to close a gap with the leaders on the downhill stretch to the finish.

The Slovenian lost touch with Quick-Step's Julian Alaphilippe and Rafal Majka of Bora-hansgrohe on the last ascent of the day but managed to get back to the front to compete for the stage victory.

"It was a very hard and long stage," the rider said. "We had head wind, more or less. But anyway we were a good group in front so we all kind of worked together. It's good because we were able to stay in front.

And then the last climb, we knew it was going to be hard and steep. So I just had to follow my own rhythm as I'm not such an explosive rider. I tried to keep the distance small with the guys in front of me and maybe risked a little bit downhill. It was good that I was able to catch them but unfortunately Alaphilippe is the better sprinter and it is quite impossible to beat him.

"I have to be pleased with second placed today," he concluded.
