Chris Froome survived yet another day in the Red Jersey and even had energy left to attack on the last climb of the day to pick up some more seconds on most of his GC rivals.

The Team Sky leader has looked strong throughout this Vuelta, more so than when he tried to win the Spanish race in 2016.

"It's definitely been an extremely hard start to the Vuelta, that's for sure," he stated. "For me personally, I'm just really happy to be in this position after a really tough Tour de France. It's the first time I've been able to really focus on being ready for the Vuelta and the first time I've done an altitude training camp before coming to the Vuelta and I'm really glad that we did that. It's beginning to pay off.

"I think also the way I structured the season with my coach, starting the season later, to not necessarily be in my best shape until just before the Tour de France. I think that's now helping me to stay fresher longer. I'm very grateful we did that."

Froome arrived together with Spanish veteran Alberto Contador, who according to the Briton is taking this race very seriously and isn't treating it as a kind of farewell tour.

"I definitely get that sense from Alberto," he said. "He's not here to ride around Spain. He's here to race and trying to win. He's in fantastic shape. He had a tough first few days in the Vuelta and lost a bit of time in Andorra but he's certainly making up for that now.

"He's really strong and I imagine he's gonna keep putting me under the pressure and I think as a team we have to make sure that something like last year (when Froome got caught out by an attack initiated by Contador) doesn't happen again."
