Julian Alaphilippe experienced the sweet taste of victory at the end of the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España.

The Quick-Step rider beat UAE's Jan Polanc and Bora-hansgrohe's Rafal Majka in a sprint of two after a strong performance on the Xorret de Cati climb, shortly before the finish line.

"I am really happy," he said shortly after the end of the stage. "I am already very happy to be back on the bike. With the whole team, we made a great start to the Vuelta. To have won the stage, I won't say that it was unexpected because I have been chasing it for a long time, but it does really feel good."

The Frenchman came into this stage well prepared to deal with the final climb, knowing that the stretch to the finish wasn't quite as tough.

"The legs were running smoothly today. This last wall, it was really on my mind. I stuck well. I kept thinking about the flat three kilometers to the finish. For me, the finish was at the top but when I saw the tempo of the Bora-hansgrohe guys I thought that it was going to be complicated."

Nevertheless, the rider easily rode away from his rivals to win the stage with two seconds of advantage.
