Astana rider Miguel Angel Lopez chose the right moment to attack and take the victory in the 11th stage of the Vuelta a España.

The rider formed part of a strong lead group when he attacked at about two kilometers from the finish. Chris Froome (Team Sky) and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) stayed behind as Lopez quickly gained terrain.

"I'm very happy," the Colombian said. "It was a very complicated stage with the rain, with a bigger effort as a result. The team has worked very well in the Vuelta a España, the teammates have been very supporting of Fabio Aru and me.

"At the end I found some very good legs. I knew the end, so I kept calm and I preferred to wait until the last kilometre, which was the most difficult."

This victory gives Lopez confidence ahead of what is still to come. The rider hopes that things will continue to develop well for him.

"I hope to continue with this progress I've been having. It is my first victory in a big race. Last year, unfortunately a crash took me out of the race and this year I've been taking it with more calmth and progressing little by little."
