Trek-Segafredo leader Alberto Contador had mixed feelings after the 11th stage of the Vuelta a España, having lost time on some of his rivals while gaining on others.

The gaps with the top riders in the general classification grew as Contador lost some time in the final two kilometers, but the fact that others had already dropped earlier allowed the Spaniard to move into the top 10 of the GC. He is now in ninth place at 3'55" from Chris Froome of Team Sky.

"It was a hard day with a lot of rain, which is very rare in a place like this," 'El Pistolero' told COPE radio. "We lost some seconds particularly to Vincenzo (Nibali) but we have also recovered some time compared to other riders.

Contador joined an attack by Nibali on the final climb but the two riders were reeled back in by the remainder of the group moments later.

"There were a lot of people at the limit and I had to take that opportunity. I preferred to make an effort instead of waiting till the end. I decided to break the race and drop a few of the favourites that I knew were having trouble. Now I have to recover for tomorrow," he said.

"(Mikel) Nieve was asked to wait for Froome, who I think was feeling a little bit uncomfortable. But we know how he is, and he recovered fast.

"This is a Vuelta in which you can lose a lot of time on one day and here we go step by step. Today was a very difficult climb, and we managed to win back time."
