Rafal Majka of Bora-hansgrohe won the 14th stage of the Vuelta a España in an impressive manner, finishing solo ahead of the General Classification contenders.

Majka formed part of the early breakaway and managed to drop his remaining companions on the final climb to take the win.

"I feel great," the Polish rider said. "In the Tour of France I crashed out, in the Tour of Poland I finished second, now I came to the Vuelta for the General Classification, and I was sick and I almost went home. But now I'm so happy and I'm not happy because I won, I'm happy because of my teammates.

"Today we did a great job and the team has always trusted me. I'm so happy that they believe in me and that's why I won today."

Majka was feeling good throughout the day and picked the right moment to launch his final attack. "I was really confident, I had good legs and Patrick Konrad did a great job for me. When I saw I was with (Rui) Costa and (Bart) De Clercq, I decided to go for it because when you wait it gets too late. Then I went full gas like a time trial."

This Vuelta a España has been particularly successful for Poland, with Majka's win coming after two stage wins for Tomasz Marczynski of Lotto Soudal. The Bora-hansgrohe rider might now want to try to get a second win as well.

"First today, I'm really happy," he said. "And at the end it is still a long way to go, and we know how is the last week in the Vuelta. It's all the time hard and now I know my legs are good and I have the motivation, so I will try for another one."
