Vuelta a España - Thomas De Gendt: I didn't expect it any more, but I like surprises

Thomas De Gendt of Lotto-Soudal handed his team its fourth stage victory at this Vuelta a España by winning a sprint of nine at the end of stage 19.

The Belgian formed part of the original breakaway and, although he was dropped on the last climb, managed to get back on time to take part in the final sprint.

"I was in the front when we started and before the stage we said 'it will probably be a big group with the Green Jersey and the mountain jersey' and those two guys were the ones who started attacking," the Belgian said. "We had a big group with very good riders, so I didn't believe much in my chances but then in the final kilometre we came back together and I know I'm not slow in the sprint.

"I was in the perfect position and I had to do the sprint of my life. I just went full gas until the finish and I could finish it off with a victory."

With this result, De Gendt now has stage victories in each of the three grand tours.

"I didn't expect it to be this year. I was not feeling good in the first week, the second week was okay, now the third week was going better but it was not really my parcours. Now the final climb was too steep for me but I had a good group with Bob Jungels, and he was pulling very hard to catch the four guys back, so it was perfect for me. I didn't expect it any more, but I like surprises."
