Team Sky's Chris Froome has all but secured his first overall victory in the Vuelta a España. In the last mountain stage, the Briton gained time on most of his direct rivals.

Froome never visibly struggled in the group of favorites, and eventually launched a final attack to drop his podium rivals. At this point, Trek-Segafredo's Alberto Contador was already ahead but Froome, accompanied by teammate Wout Poels, was only focused on securing his final victory.

"It is an absolutely incredible feeling," the Briton said. "What a way to end such a massive three weeks of racing. And of course for me now having completed the Tour (de France) and Vuelta double is just an amazing feeling.

"Thank you to everyone for all the support over the last few weeks and over the last few months and of course also my team who have just been fantastic this last few weeks."

Froome, who on Sunday will likely win his fifth grand tour, went on to praise Contador as the Spaniard took a famous victory in his last ever mountain stage.

"That was such a tough climb, a really really tough climb. We did everything to try to catch Alberto (Contador) but he was too strong today. Congratulations to him, because for him to finish a career like this is beautiful."
