Danish rider Mikkel Bjerg of Team Giant-Castelli is the new U23 World Time Trial Champion. The Scandinavian beat American Brandon McNulty and Frenchman Corentin Ermenault for Gold.

The route was 37.2 kilometers long, divided into a short lap of 16.1 kilometers and a long lap of 21.1 kilometers. The long lap included a short climb up the Birkelundsbakken.

Neilson Powless, who was one of the last riders to start, set the fastest time at the first of six intermediate points but then saw his advantage disappear gradually and soon began to lose time on Mikkel Bjerg.

The Danish rider had already completed the course at this point, doing so in 47 minutes and six seconds. After a relatively start, clocking the sixth best time at the first checkpoint, Mikkelsen began to dominate in the second section and ended up setting the best time in all of the remaining checkpoints as well as the finish line.

Powless continued to be a threat to the other podium spots but had his hopes ended by a crash between the fifth and the sixth checkpoint. The American seemed distracted by a mechanical issue and ended up crashing into a fence. At the point of the crash he was headed for second place, but eventually had to settle for ninth.

Frenchman Corentin Ermenault, who was next to reach the finish, did manage to conquer a podium spot by beating the time of Luxembourger Tom Wirtgen by just two seconds.

Bjerg had already announced his arrival to the top level with a second place at the U23 European Time Trial Championships earlier this year. He also finished second at the National U23 Time Trial Championships and third at the Elite Time Trial Championships of his country.

The 18-year-old from Copenhagen is the second Dane in three years to win Gold at this event, after Mads Wurtz Schmidt in 2015.
