UCI announces reduction of peloton size for 2018

The UCI has announced a limitation to the size of the peloton for road races from the 2018 season.

Following the meeting of the Union Cycliste Internationale in Bergen, Norway, where the Road Race World Championships are taking place, the governing body announced some measures with the objective of improving the security of riders, spectators and the race convoy.

The UCI has taken the decision of limiting the size of the peloton to a maximum of 176 riders in all events of the international calendar. This is why from 2018, there will be a maximum of seven riders per team in all men's races, with exception of the Grand Tours which will have eight members per squad.

The women's WorldTour calendar will have a maximum of six riders per team in one-day races and of seven for stage races.
