Lauren Dolan finished the junior women's individual time trial of the World Championships with her leg and thigh covered in blood after she crashed during the course.

One image of the junior competition that traveled the world showed Dolan crossing the finish line, covered in blood and with visible cuts to the right leg and thigh.

The British rider had to undergo a two-hour surgery to fix the cuts to the leg that she suffered when she crashed against a concrete barrier and slid on the floor, still clipped to her bicycle. Despite the amount of blood she could see, she didn't want to withdraw from the competition.

"I knew I had come off quite badly when I saw the amount of blood that was dripping down my leg while I was waiting for my bike change," she said to the British Daily Telegraph. "But I didn’t realise the extent of how bad it actually was until I crossed the line and looked down to see a chunk of flesh was missing from my quad and knee."

The surgery repaired two serious cuts of 7 centimetres, one right next to the knee and the other on the lower leg. "I'm in a lot of pain. My leg has been stitched up and the operation took about two hours," she told BBC Sport. "I am nauseous, and I am waiting to get a flight back home now. It's my 18th birthday today and I won't forget it for a long time."
