Gianni Moscon (Italy) has been disqualified from the World Championships road race.

At around 40 kilometres from the finish line, the Italian suffered a crash and got dropped from the peloton at a key moment of the race. Images showed him grabbing a bottle from his team car for a prolonged time.

This "sticky bottle" moment helped Moscon get back to the peloton and some kilometres later he was even part of a two-men escape along with Julian Alaphillipe, that almost held on until the end of the race.

Even though the rider of Team Sky was eventually dropped by the Frenchman and reeled back in by the reduced peloton, he could finish the race in the main group. But moments later, and after the race jury studied the images of the rider grabbing the bottle, he appeared as disqualified in the final official results of the day.
