Luis Leon Sanchez takes the victory at GP Beghelli

Astana's Luis Leon Sanchez has taken the victory at the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli. The rider escaped from the peloton with 5 kilometres to go and crossed the finish line on his own.

The Italian race took place in and around Monteveglio over 196.3 kilometres. The race started with several attempts of an escape but the peloton was not inspired to try hard to repel each of them from the beginning as none seemed particularly dangerous for the victory.

The first strong escape happened with more than 35 kilometres to go when a group that included riders like Jarlinson Pantano (Trek-Segafredo), Danny van Poppel (Sky), Sebastien Reichenbach (FDJ), Christopher Juul Jensen (Orica-Scott) and Nick Dougal (Dimension Data) created a gap of more than one minute with the peloton.

As the kilometres passed, the front group was reduced until only Juul Jensen, Reichenbach, Andrea Vendrame (Androni-Giocatoli) and Sergey Chernetski (Astana) were the only ones left. Just past the 10-kilometre mark, all the escapees were caught by the favourites group.

With five kilometres to go, and after several attempts by others, Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) got away and formed a gap of less than half minute with the rest. The rider kept an advantage until the end, crossing the finish line on his own.

Bahrain-Merida's Sonny Colbrelli was second and Team Sky's Elia Viviani third.
