A common cold has made an early end to the season of David de la Cruz. The rider was set to take part in Milano-Torino and Il Lombardia but has had to cancel his participation.

The last Monument of the season was to be the last race of the Spaniard with Quick-Step Floors, but the farewell had to come sooner than anticipated. "It feels bad not being able to appear in those races. I wanted very much to finish 2017 and ride my last races with Quick-Step at a good level and with good options for a victory.

"I've been feeling bad for several days because of a cold and that has stopped me from training in the best conditions. Like this it would have been impossible to be 100% fit for the next races, so along with the team, I took the decision of cancelling my participation."

This way, De la Cruz finishes his most successful season so far as a professional cyclist in which he took stage victories at Paris-Nice and the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and 20 top-10 positions.

The rider finished his adventure with Quick-Step Floors in the Vuelta a España, in which he was very close to getting the Red Jersey at the stage of Andorra and finished three stages in the top three. A crash forced him out of the race at the penultimate stage but his overall performance showed his potential as a GC rider.
