Trek-Segafredo's John Degenkolb has begun to prepare for next year after being forced to finish his 2017 season early due to respiratory problems.

In September, Trek-Segafredo announced that the German was hospitalised due to respiratory problems. Degenkolb had already shown symptoms in the Vuelta a España and they continued into the Tour of Denmark, taking him out of both competitions.

"John’s condition was not improving enough after his DNF in de Tour of Denmark, so we decided he had to go to the hospital for additional tests for his respiratory issues," said the team's head doctor, Nino Daniele.

"Fortunately, John quickly started to feel better and could leave the hospital after a few days. He will start training again in two weeks, but of course, we will follow-up on him during the coming months."

The rider wasn't happy with his 2017 campaign or the way it ended, but he is already looking to the future. "After I came out of the hospital, there was no time enough to get back into shape to still race this season, so we decided that I would take my break a bit earlier this year," he explained.

"In two weeks, I will start training again and I am really looking forward to that. 2017 didn’t exactly go like I wanted and expected, so I am ready for 2018. Bring it on!"
