Sam Bennett conquers first stage at Tour of Turkey

Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) has won the first stage of the Tour of Turkey. The Irishman was the first to cross the line at the final sprint.

The first stage of the debut of the race as part of the WorldTour calendar was 176.7 kilometres long between Alanya and Kemer.

The day started with an escape of six riders. Alex Turrin (Wilier-Selle Italia), Vincenzo Albanese and Simone Sterbini (Bardiani CSF), Flavio Cardoso (Soul Brasil), Batuhan Ozgur and Onur Balkan (Turkey) rode ahead of the peloton for most of the stage.

At 35 kilometres to go, a peloton pulled mainly by Trek-Segafredo caught all the escapees and all the teams with sprinters started setting a high pace to position their riders for the final sprint.

Bennett showed to have the better legs in the last metres and crossed the finish line ahead of Marco Benfatto (Androni Giocattoli) and Trek-Segafredo's Edward Theuns. Federico Zurlo (UAE Team Emirates) and Paolo Simion (Bardiani CSF) completed the top five of the day.
