Sam Bennett unbeatable in Tour of Turkey

Bora-hansgrohe's Sam Bennett has won the second stage of the Tour of Turkey, taking his second stage win in a row to defend his overall lead in the WorldTour race.

The stage, 205 kilometers long from Kumlica to Fethiye, saw an escape of Bardiani-CSF rider Mirco Maestri and Murilo Affonso of Funvic/Brasil Pro Cycling.

The slow pace in the peloton may have been the cause of a lack of concentration, as a bad crash occured at 60 kilometers from the finish line. Russian Sergey Chernetskiy of Astana, one of the candidates for the overall classification, landed on his face and was forced to abandon.

The two attacked stayed ahead of the peloton for some more time but were eventually caught at 12 kilometers from the line.

In the final sprint, none of the teams was able to really take control of the peloton and those fighting for the win had to depend mostly on themselves to get the work done.

Bennett was visibly stronger than his opponents however and took his second stage win ahead of Trek-Segafredo's Edward Theuns and Astana's Riccardo Minali.

With this win, Bennett remains at the top of the standings with a ten-second advantage over Theuns.
