AG2R La Mondiale has confirmed that Jan Bakelants has successfully undergone surgery on the L3 vertebra.

The rider fractured several vertebrae during a crash he suffered last weekend in Il Lombardia. He had to be stabilised in the hospital in Como, Italy before he could go to Belgium to undergo this emergency surgery.

"The operation went well," confirmed the team's press officer Yves Perret to the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "We will communicate more on Monday when doctors have made a complete balance of the situation and have told us more about his health and recovery."

Bakelants had an unstable fracture in the L3 vertebra, while the other fractures in the D8, D10 and L1 vertebrae didn't need any intervention.

The Belgian was one of the victims of the same curve in which Laurens De Plus (Quick-Step Floors) and Direct-Energie's Lilian Calmejane also went over the guardrail.
