Vincenzo Nibali is going to focus his 2018 season on the objective of taking the Rainbow Jersey at the World Championships of Innsbruck.

After the presentation of the 2018 Tour de France, the Italian is now waiting for the unveiling of the route of the Giro d'Italia to decide which of the two he will ride.

Bahrain-Merida's coach Paolo Slongo has confirmed to the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport that Nibali will surely ride the Vuelta a España with the goal of being in top form for the Innsbruck championships.

"There are two possible ways for Vincenzo: Giro, Vuelta and World Championships, or Tour, Vuelta and Championships," he said. "We have two references. Data from 2016 when he prepared for the Olympic Games: he won the Tour, where he went to prepare, and in Rio, he was very strong.

"And in 2017: he finished third in the Giro, second in the Vuelta and went strong to Il Lombardia, where he took the victory."

Slongo said the rider will start his season in the Tour de San Juan, Argentina. "It is a race that has always brought luck to the year and also because it is not a stressful race. It is a plain race so it is ideal for preparation."

The coach also thinks Nibali should ride races like Milano-San Remo and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. "Because of the World Championships, he has to get used to the long races. Not for the physical aspect, but to get used to the stress, the tension in the group."
