Team Sky has confirmed the contract extension of Sebastian Henao. The Colombian will remain at the British squad after having a consistent 2017 season.

"I’m very, very happy to continue in this great team – Team Sky is my second family. It’s the best team in the world," said the rider. "I’ve enjoyed a good year and continued to race at the highest level. Every season I hope to get better."

Henao turned professional at Team Sky in 2014 and since then he has never missed the Giro d'Italia, finishing in 17th position in 2016 and in the fifth spot of the 19th stage in 2017. This is why his main objective for 2018 is to come back to get a good result.

"My big goal for next year is the Giro d’Italia. I would love to win the best young rider’s jersey," he commented. "But in general, my goals remain the same – to support the team’s leaders in all competitions and keep growing as a cyclist."

Team Sky coach Xabier Artexte welcomes the extension of Henao's contract and thinks he will continue on a good development path within the squad. "This season we really tried to work with Sebastian on his consistency and we tried this year to have a really solid season. I think since Tour Down Under, up until the final races he’s competed this year, they’ve almost exclusively been WorldTour races. He’s had a number of good performances with the pressure of trying to support the team, and I think he became a really good domestique rider," he explained.

"He’s still young but he’s at the age where he can now look to start getting some results while continuing to develop. This year it was interesting to see how well he performed in some big WorldTour races like Tour Down Under, Paris-Nice or the Giro d’Italia. He did really solid work for the team but now is the time to start getting some results for himself too."
