Four-times Tour de France winner Chris Froome has claimed that it was not a surprise to him when Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) won the Giro d'Italia.
The Kenyan-born rider is in Shanghai along with other riders to take part in the Criterium Shanghai, an exhibition race organised by the Tour de France. When the name of Dumoulin and his Giro victory came up in interviews, the rider mentioned an anecdote that involves him.
"For me, it was not a surprise at all," he said to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. "With some friends, I made the bet that Dumoulin was going to win. What did I win? Ten euros!"
Now the Team Sky rider is looking forward to a duel with the Dutchman in the upcoming Tour de France. "Dumoulin belongs to a new generation of riders with whom I've never been in a race fighting for the win," he explained.
"I look forward to doing the Tour de France next year and hopefully he will also be there."
The Giro d'Italia champion still hasn't confirmed his participation in the upcoming edition of the French Grand Tour as he is waiting for the complete route of the Giro d'Italia to be announced.
