Jan Bakelants (AG2R La Mondiale) is already focusing on his rehabilitation in Belgium to recover the core strength after his crash in Il Lombardia.

The Belgian rider was one of the victims of the curves at the Italian race as he went over the guardrails and landed on his back on top of a rock. A crash that could have had worse consequences, ended with fractures in the D8, D10, L1 and L3 vertebrae. The latter required stabilisation surgery.

The rider is now going to a rehabilitation centre in Leuven, Belgium, three times a week. "It is ideal to strengthen my back and at the same time build some basic condition," said the rider to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

In around a month, Bakelants will undergo new tests to confirm that his vertebrae bones are growing together again. "If that goes according to plan, I can train outside from the first of January. Soon I will be able to be back on the rollers," he commented.

The rider has an interior corset made of titanium and it will remain there at least until April of 2018, but he could compete with it if he has reached a complete recovery before that date.
