Vincenzo Nibali of Bahrain-Merida has won the Italian Cyclist of the Year award for the sixth time in his career.

The gala took place in the Tuscan town of Calenzano, where Nibali was rewarded for his podium spots in the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España, and his impressive victory at Il Lombardia.

'The Shark of Messina' received 710 points and finished well ahead of Matteo Trentin (490 points) and Diego Ulissi (425 points).

In winning the 2017 Giglio d'Oro (Golden Lily), Nibali brings home his sixth national trophy after having won it before in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Last year, the award went to Giacomo Nizzolo.

The record is still held by Francesco Moser, who won the trophy nine times.

The award for best neo-pro went to Bardiani-CSF's Vincenzo Albanese.
