Fabio Aru has decided to skip the 2018 Tour de France and has chosen instead to ride the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España before the World Championships.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport claims that the rider has chosen a path that has been successful for him in the past, particularly in 2015 when he finished second in the General Classification of the Italian Grand Tour and took the overall victory at the Spanish race.

Without entering into any specifics about Grand Tours, the rider drew a general picture of what his 2018 season will look like. "I'm definitely going to Abu Dhabi, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-San Remo or the Tour of Catalonia," said the rider to the newspaper.

"I would like to ride Liege-Bastogne-Liege and I will surely do the Tour of the Alps, which includes a stage that will be in the 2018 World Championships, another race that I will definitely race along with the Vuelta."

The rider also addressed his new challenges at UAE Team Emirates and the words of the General Manager of his former team Astana, Alexander Vinokourov, about starting legal action against him for leaving the squad without giving them enough time to find a replacement. "Astana made my dream come true by giving me the transition to the professional peloton but it was time to change," commented the rider.

"I think a new team will increase expectations but will also give me new incentives and motivations. About Vinokourov? I don't understand him. He was a rider too, he should have understood my needs."
