Eddy Merckx: Chris Froome should ride the Giro d'Italia if he is a champion

Belgian legend Eddy Merckx believes that Chris Froome has to make an appearance in the Giro d'Italia if he wants to confirm his status as a true champion.

The Cannibal shared his opinion with La Gazzetta dello Sport, saying that Froome should start in the upcoming Giro despite any other plans he may have.

"Froome would do well to ride the Giro. If he is a champion he has to start," Merckx said. "Even if he is already thinking about his fifth Tour de France win.

While Nairo Quintana proved that a Giro-Tour double is extremely complicated in modern cycling, Merckx believes that Froome does have what it takes to do well in both.

"For a rider like him, it's definitely possible. With the Tour-Vuelta double he proved that he can do it. He has the mentality and the motivation to pull it off, or at least try it."

The Belgian also spoke about the possibility of seeing a battle between Froome and Tom Dumoulin. "If Dumoulin takes part it will be a fantastic fight. No idea who would win it."
