GIRO D'ITALIA

The organisation of the Giro d'Italia has defused a possible disagreement with the Israeli government by insisting that its use of 'West Jerusalem' was not political.

The government of Israel, the host country of the first three stages of the 2018 Giro d'Italia, complained about the use of West Jerusalem in the race's presentation on Wednesday, and threatened to pull out of the agreement signed some months ago.

Giro organiser RCS Sport replied saying that it "would like to clarify that the start of the Giro d'Italia 2018 will take place from the city of Jerusalem".

"During the Presentation of the 2018 race course, technical material containing the wording "West Jerusalem" was used, due to the fact that the race will take place logistically in that area of the city," the statement continued.

"That particular wording, devoid of any political value, has been removed from any material related to the Giro d'Italia."
