Orica-Scott's Esteban Chaves will start his 2018 season with the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Australia.

The Colombian expects to leave behind a 2017 season in which he suffered from a knee injury and a broken shoulder blade and hopes to find back the good shape that took him to finish second in the General Classification of the 2016 Giro d'Italia and the victory at Il Lombardia.

"It’s important to feel excited to get back on the bike and enjoy again," said the rider to Australian website news.com.au. "I’m in full-training now and happy to see every week the fitness and body returning step by step to what it can do. I’m excited, as always, to go back to Australia."

The rider will skip the Santos Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in which he participated last year and will instead focus on this race.

The 65th edition of the Herald Sun Tour will take place from the 31st of January to the 4th of February and will be 731.9 kilometres, being the longest edition in the last years. Stage 3 will be the Queen Stage, a 218-kilometre long course that will have an uphill finish to the Lake Mountain summit.

"I think they’re getting too soft, so I thought I’d make it like the old days," joked race director John Trevorrow. "But I think it’s the best stage we’ve put together in this race."
