UCI President David Lappartient believes racist remarks of Gianni Moscon against FDJ's Kevin Reza should have resulted in a punishment straight from the highest governing body in cycling.

The newly chosen president of the UCI has criticised his predecessor Brian Cookson for many things including the decision to leave Moscon's behaviour unpunished. "It goes completely against what the UCI stands for," said the Frenchman to British newspaper The Times. "This guy, he’s always involved in bad situations — first racism, then holding a car, now he’s accused of pushing a rider off."

Apart from the racist comments, the rider supposedly pushed Reza's teammate Sebastian Reichenbach during the Tre Valli Varesine, which caused fractures to the pelvis and elbow.

"We need to be strong on this. I am watching the Moscon affair very carefully. If, after racially abusing one rider, he later pushed one of his team-mates off his bike, then he has nothing to do with cycling if he behaves like this," he explained.

Moscon was also disqualified from the 2017 World Championships Road Race for getting a tow from the Italian team car after having a mechanical problem.
